I'm Nicholas Yek.
a.k.a the
$whoami: Yet another
Systems Engineer
I do anything computing systems related!
, focussing on Reliability, Performance Tuning and MLOps.
The use & development of technology reflects our values.
So, my focus is on making and sustaining interesting technology;
Technology that’s well-designed, reliable, and empowers communities.
My technical interests: high-performance software Parallelism, Concurrency, Distributed Systems & Tuning , computing systems Embedded, Operating Systems , and intelligent things Automata theory, AI/ML & computer networks .
I enjoy exploring intersections between theory and practical computing systems.
Seeing how humans and technology interact (HCI) is pretty amusing to me.
EXPERIENCE 💼

TikTok
Site Reliability Engineer (MLOps, Global Monetization/Ads)
π Oct 2025 - Present
I built systems to improve the reliability & resource efficiency of distributed machine-learning pipelines, and reduced organizational friction slowing down experiments.
- Systematically profiled and optimized dozens of Apache Spark data pipelines via reducing scheduling contention, and tuning executor memory and concurrency. This increased cluster job throughput by 90% while reducing pipeline runtime by 30%
- Automated dataset lifecycle governance by integrating Hive databases into observability dashboards and notification workflows to identify and remove stale datasets. This reclaimed hundreds of petabytes of storage, reducing infrastructure costs by over USD 200k per quarter
- Led an organization-wide rollout of data caching tooling to reduce compute costs in data proprocessing stages during model training. This saved approximately 201k CPU cores in compute cost and improved GPU utilization rates by 8% on average
- Investigated and eliminated a prevalent Spark pipeline performance bottleneck by removing premature caching of large datasets, improving task throughput by up to >10Γ while reducing heap usage by up to 20%
- Diagnosed and fixed data quality issues in ML data pipelines, identifying incorrect downsampling, feature misalignment, and output anomalies affecting downstream model training
- Improved oncall and routine operational processes with regular team-wide technical sharing and writing of playbook guides to systematically solve typical oncall problems and handle day-to-day sysadmin operations

SKILLS ✏️
There are far too many technologies & tools that I’ve worked with in non-trivial capacities. The following are a subset of my most relevant, used &/or loved.
PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES 💬
My love languages are C++, Python and Golang. ❤️
I am proficient in all the listed languages below by virtue of my work experience, education and personal projects.
BACKEND TECHNOLOGIES 🐳
$ git checkout -b backend main

FRONTEND FRAMEWORKS 🎨
<> I served up div soup with these frameworks, from mobile to web-app. </>
MACHINE LEARNING & DATA SCIENCE 🤖
I plot graphs and make my GPU go brrrt while training models.
EMBEDDED COMPUTING 💽
I program microcontrollers with a magnetised needle and a steady hand.
PROJECTS 🔧
We are what we eat build. I have curated projects @ the projects tab, but these are my favourites…
Executive Summary: Dioscuri’s html frontend is highly customizable (a la netscape) with a built-in
simple theming framework. Nyancat demo (other themes are available): Executive Summary: FindNUS is a lost and found web app built during Summer 2022 Orbital. As the backend developer, I built a RESTful API backend using a microservices architecture. Apart from regular CRUD, we also used some NLP and fuzzy searching to help lost people find their lost stuff. Executive Summary:  Dioscuri π
Dioscuri is a Gemini protocol (layer 7) implementation in Rust.
It functions as a http-to-gemini proxy that brings Gemini websites to any browser of your choice.
  FindNUS π
Awarded the highest level of achivement, given to the top 7% of teams (top 29 of 414 teams) for NUS School of Computing’s 2022 iteration of Orbital.
  SnipNScan π·
Using OpenCV and Tesseract, I built a QR code and text scanner because too much text in this world is embedded in images and are un-copypasteable. Think of images of code.
